With 75 Kiwanians and guests in attendance, they danced, sang and celebrated the night away, all to benefit Ace & TJ's Grin Kids!
The evening started as you were handed a mason jar souvenir upon entering... First stop... the photo booth provided by ShutterBooth, next, a guest performance by Elvis! A silent auction featuring a trip to Daytona, Richard Petty Driving Experience and a complete golf package were a huge hit!! (Not to mention the Firefly Sweet Tea package, um, yum!)
All of this fun, fellowship and celebration added up to over $3,000 that Kiwanis Uptown will donate to Grin Kids, LIVE on Kiss 95.1 on Wednesday, July 15th!
So make sure to tune in and browse on over to Kiwanis Uptown for some more great pictures! www.kiwanisuptown.org.

Kiwanis Uptown meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday at Cans Bar (corner of 5th and Graham).
Mecklenburg Kiwanis Meeting

Today I went to the Mecklenburg Kiwanis meeting where of course they welcomed me with open arms. I truly feel like I am a member of their club too, what a cool feeling.
I spoke some about International Convention and was followed by Dr. Mark Mogul who spoke about the Kiwanis Pediatric Cancer fund, and how it relates to the Kiwanis' plea to find the next worldwide service project. The key is figuring out local impact (partnership with the Children's Oncology Group www.curesearch.org) and international impact (100% of the world is affected by cancer). They are putting together a proposal to submit to Kiwanis International... How cool would it be to have a project from right here in the Carolinas become our next Worldwide Service Project? How cool would it be to cure cancer? Hey, if you're going to dream... DREAM BIG!
President Doug Dickison closed the meeting by challenging every member to bring a guest to the July 20th meeting... They are motivated to grow Kiwanis to the one million member mark by 2015... And I'm confident we can do it!
Thanks for having me Mecklenburgers... See you in 2 weeks!

The Mecklenburg club meets the 1st & 3rd Wednesday at Crown Plaza Hotel Uptown from 12-1pm.
More information at www.mecklenburgkiwanis.org

Hey Y'all... I'm back from Nashville, and ready to serve RIGHT NOW!

Howdy Y'all...

First, let me thank you for allowing me to serve as your Lieutenant Governor! The trip to Nashville this past week is one that I will always remember!

From the Grand Ole Opry to Forums and Leadership Sessions to making my way down Broadway listening to up and coming stars... the trip was memorable to say the least!

On Thursday evening we arrived just in time for District Dinner at BB Kings BBQ with the Carolinas and EC&C (Eastern Canada and The Caribbean). Food was great, company even better. Evelyn and Valerie from Kiwanis Uptown were my travelling companions... We sat with folks from Aruba and Jamaica... and had an awesome time.

After leaving dinner we headed to the hospitality suite sponsored by the Carolina's District's Stan Perry for some fellowship and fun. We met up with Sam, Matthew, Jennifer and Dr. Mark from the Mecklenburg club… and traveled as a pack for the remainder of the trip. We quickly learned that cultural experiences abound in Music City!

Friday morning came quite early as I led a Young Professional's Forum (many of you reading this may have met me there... hi again!) with Rhonda Vrell and Kevin Dean. The response was absolutely phenomenal... and I'm thrilled to meet so many awesome Kiwanians from across the globe who are excited to GROW!

The rest of Friday was filled with Leadership sessions on going from good to GREAT, Women in Kiwanis, Working with Volunteers, etc... Next, off to the House of Delegates to elect YOUR Kiwanis International Board and vote on important amendments.

Delegates to the 94th annual Kiwanis International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, voted the following on the proposed amendments:
•Amendment No. 1—Club funds used to pay insurance premiums—passed
•Amendment No. 2—Freezing tiered dues levels in qualifying countries—passed
•Amendment No. 3—Common billing date of October 1 for all clubs—passed
•Amendment No. 4—Eliminate the magazine exemption for spouses—failed

Friday night took us to the Grand Ole Opry where the likes of Tracy Byrd, Ricky Skaggs and Little Jimmy Dickens took the stage. ..

Saturday morning I toured the tradeshow, attended more forums, spoke with our very own CEO Rob Parker, and attended the Closing Session.

I’m pleased to announce that the Delegates to the 94th annual Kiwanis International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, elected Paul Palazzolo, Springfield, Illinois, to be the 2009-2010 Kiwanis International president.

In addition, we elected Sylvester Neal, Auburn, Washington, to be president-elect, and Alan Penn, Medina, Ohio, to be vice president. Palazzolo, Neal and Penn take office October 1, 2009.

Finally, we got the opportunity to elect your International Trustees! Delegates to the 94th annual Kiwanis International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, elected Jerry Peuler, Stewart Ross and Pam Fleming, to be trustees on the 2009-1010 Kiwanis International Board. The three join John Button and Pietro Grasso, who were previously elected by delegates from Eastern Canada and the Caribbean and the Kiwanis International European Federation.

Paul Palazzolo gave an inspiring speech on getting down to business RIGHT NOW … So let’s serve our community… lets GROW Kiwanis together… let’s get One Million Members by 2015… just think of the lives that we can change…

Dont wanna wait til tomorrow,
Why put it off another day?

…Make future plans, dont dream about yesterday, hey
Cmon turn, turn this thing around

Right now, hey
Its your tomorrow
Right now,
Cmon,its everything
Right now

Catch a magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything….”
-Van Halen

Key Leader!

In addition to being your faithful Lt. Governor, I am the site coordinator of Key Leader. Key Leader is a Kiwanis sponsored youth program, based on service leadership, integrity, and community-building. This year's event takes place at Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, SC from April 24-26.

As you know, since 1925, Kiwanis International has positively impacted the lives of young leaders through its youth leadership organizations: Key Club and Circle K. Many credit these programs for their first taste of leadership, including senators, governors, university presidents, corporate executives, and a United States president.

In 2005, a task force of professionals with more than 175 years of experience in teaching, coaching, developing, and encouraging young leaders was asked to invent something extraordinary. The result is an exciting program designed to move beyond where most other youth leadership programs stopped. The result is Key Leader.

In three action-packed days, high school students from diverse backgrounds come together to learn about themselves and each other. They build self-confidence through experiences from workshops to ropes courses. During the weekend a Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of true leadership—leadership comes from helping others succeed.

Key Leader is designed to teach what it means to be a youth leader in three different communities: the local community; the state or national community; and the global community.

I challenge each club in Division 6 to sponsor (or partially sponsor) 2 students to Key Leader. (I've heard from a little bird that the Mecklenburg Club is trying to send 4... can you meet the challenge??) If you have any questions or would like us to come present a program, please contact me for more information.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Rachel Clifton

_____________________________________________________

Rachel Clifton

Key Leader Site Coordinator | www.key-leader.org

p. 704.577.1807 | keyleader@carolinakiwanis.org
