The District Convention of Carolinas Kiwanians held in Charleston, SC, in the fall of 1968, saw the last campaign for the office of Governor of the District, for that was also the first time the office of Governor-Elect was formed.
This was also the time when the term of office for the District was changed to correspond to the National term. This change of tenure made it a difficult year for all concerned because before plans could be formed and carried out the short year was over. Because of our nine months tenure we became known as the "Stork Club Bunch." In spite of the short term we did get quite a few things done.
The Council Meeting held in Chicago during October, 1968, was a week crowded with plans and hopes for the short year. It was a highlight in Kiwanis for me.
Our Division meetings, held in the spring of 1969, illustrated the work done by the Lt. Governors and their helpers. The excellent reports given at these meetings were backed up by the good attendance. It was a special privilege to have worked with such a fine group of Kiwanians. Two of the Lt. Governors of that year have since served our District as Governors.
The International Convention held in Miami Beach was one of the best to that date. One sad thing about the meeting was that it was the first Herb had missed. Everyone on the International as well as the District level missed Herb's being there. The District meeting held in High Point under the able management of B. C. Fowler registered the largest number of Delegates at a District Convention. This was the first District Convention our Secretary was unable to attend.
The District held its own despite the short year. While no new Clubs were chartered the ground work was laid for two new Kiwanis Clubs and three Circle K Clubs, as well as two Key Clubs which have since been chartered. A small gain in membership was realized in the Kiwanis Clubs.
Our sponsor from International in 1968, was Loren Badsky, who has since served as President of International. The visit of International President, H. M. (Hi) Heimbaugh, to the District was hosted by the Belmont Kiwanis Club who, though being one of the smaller clubs in the District, put on one of the best District meetings ever held.
All the District Chairmen, Club Presidents, Secretaries and other officers who had a responsibility during the "Stork Club Year" did a bang-up job for which all are grateful.
IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR.
