Leah was born in Virginia and grew up in Shepherdstown, WV which is a town about an hour and a half outside of Washington, DC. She graduated in the top 10 of her class in high school, was Vice President of the Literary Club, and was a member of many other organizations including Key Club, Student Government, the Honor Society and the French Honor Society.
In 1994, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, receiving her BA degree in English. While attending ASU, she was a member of the Appalachian Popular Programming Society, the honor/service fraternity Gamma Beta Phi, Vice President of Amnesty International at ASU and worked for In-Hall Security as well as The Appalachian.
After completing her degree, Leah moved back to West Virginia and became the Assistant Manager of Book Warehouse. On October 21, 1995, she married Karl S. Moretz and soon returned to Boone becoming the first Administrative Secretary of the Carolinas District of Kiwanis. In October of 1996 she was honored to become a member of the Kiwanis Club of Boone. She currently serves as Assistant Editor to their bulletin, and has earned Distinguished Kiwanian for both 1996/1997 and 1997/1998.
The District Office was established in October of 1994 by Governor Leo A. Zabinski and District Secretary Bill Wirth. Office space was shared with the District Secretary's Advertising Specialty Company. This arrangement has kept the expense for services at an acceptable level.
Governor Zabinski desired the district to be computerized, and most particularly, he wanted to create a club monthly report form that could be "read" by a computer scanning the reports and placing the data in a database from which summaries could be produced for the Governor, Lt. Governors, other board members and selected committee chairman.
The project sounded simple enough but a year and a half was spent creating a system accomplish this task. The system went on line in 1996 and now provides the District with most up-to-date information possible. No other method currently in use throughout Kiwanis can match the data collection and district status provided by this system.
After several temporary office secretaries, the District selected Leah Moretz as our permanent District Administrative Secretary in December 1995. Leah's unmatched secretarial and Kiwanis skills have made the District Office a responsive location for support to our Kiwanians on many levels. She has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Boone since October 1996. Among many other responsibilities, she maintains written communication with each Lt. Governor on a bi-weekly basis and with the Club Secretaries on a quarterly basis to keep our District up-to-date on its duties.
Besides an innovative computer system for our club reporting, and the position of Administrative Secretary being added, the District also acquired an 800 number to make information from the District Office freely and easily accessible to our Kiwanians. 1-800-739-1827 can be dialed between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm on weekdays, and Kiwanians can find out virtually anything about the Carolinas District.
For 1994-1995, the District Office was given the Diamond Group Honorable Mention Award for Administrative Excellence. The Diamond Group Honor Award for Administrative Excellence was given for 1996-97. This is a great honor, as only one Honorable Mention Award, and one Honor Award are given each year in each of the five size categories.
